Statue in Boston The saint of the day for January 23rd is a familiar one—Phillips Brooks wrote the words to "O Little Town of Bethlehem." He was also a notable preacher, as well as the man who introduced Helen Keller to both Christianity and to her teacher, Annie Sullivan. More about him is here in the service of Noonday Prayer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcPNZHkaipM&t=3s

Ever wonder why we have a United Thank Offering? Today's Noonday Prayer service focuses on the woman who started the process.
The modern icon below was done by Marcy Hall. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou36CamdVYE The image of desert mothers comes from https://www.exeter-cathedral.org.uk/news-events/latest-news/the-desert-mothers-and-mindfulness/ In the early days of the church, some men and women left the cities for the desert, where there were fewer temptations. These three women—Theodora, Sarah, and Syncletica, are remembered for their witness and words. More about them is at the link below to Noonday Prayer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AhnWxK2MNo |
Saints Alive!
I have been privileged to offer Noonday Prayer at my church, usually on Thursdays, which doesn’t matter because it’s on Youtube forever. [It’s amazing what can be done with a smartphone and a smart, helpful parish administrator!] The service is brief, with a place for a meditation. We usually look at the Episcopal calendar of saints, who are nearly always honored on their death dates, not their birth dates. Here is a hymn by medieval saint Hildegard of Bingen to set the mood.
